Doug Hutchison spent a total of 39 years as a respected Texas law enforcement officer, retiring as an officer with the Irving Police Department and again as a Special Ranger with the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association. Carol Hutchison, Doug’s wife of 31 years, is an award-winning writer and photographer. She was for several years a frequent contributor and monthly columnist for the Georgetown View in Georgetown, Texas, also serving as the magazine’s creative director. Her writing and photography have been published in magazines such as American Cowboy, Western Horseman, and The Cattleman. When Doug and Carol decided to work on a project together, Behind the Texas Badge was the perfect fit. They used every skill and connection they have to bring the project to fruition.
Behind the Texas Badge is a big, beautiful coffee table book. Doug and Carol Hutchison spent a year traveling more than 15,000 miles around Texas to photograph and interview 103 Texas law enforcement officers and to bring to light the officers’ personal stories, stories that range from heartbreaking to hilarious. Officers from large and small departments, city and rural, from sheriffs to rookie officers, including mounted patrol, bicycle patrol, Texas Game Wardens, Texas State Park Police, school district officers, and police reserves, told their stories. The book also features images of badges, shoulder patches, patrolvehicles, police motorcycles, and engraved firearms, but the stories are the book’s heart and soul, while the photography offers a beautiful tour of Texas and those who protect its citizens.
